Stephensen Elementary School, located on Mountain Home Air Force Base, was named in honor of Col. Mark L. Stephensen, a U.S. Air Force pilot. Col. Stephensen was tragically shot down during the Vietnam War on April 29, 1967, and was declared missing in action. The school, originally named Base Primary School, was officially renamed in 2014 to pay tribute to Col. Stephensen and his family's enduring legacy.

Col. Stephensen was stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base before his deployment to Vietnam. His family, including his children, has maintained a strong connection to the base and the school, with visits that highlight the ongoing recognition of his sacrifice. The school's renaming was part of a larger effort to honor military families' contributions and provide a sense of history and pride to the students who attend Stephensen Elementary.

The school serves approximately 300 military-dependent children.
